About Opokua
For all my life I have had the opportunity to be close to the health care system, both in homes and in the hospital. To be able to receive care in a place where you feel safe, surrounded by people you feel safe with, is incredibly important for the results and experiences. This is of course applicable when someone is having a baby too. I want all clients to feel seen, heard and respected at all times - to help them make informed decisions and give them the tools to help themselves.
I have a passion for supporting people who deviate from the standard norms and who have because of that felt worried about being in contact with the healthcare system. I want to make sure that people with a different skin color, mental health issues, weight, sexual orientation or religion has the best possible opportunity to get treated fairly and with respect. Years of experience from working within the healthcare system and my life living as a black woman has prepared me well and I continue to grow my empathy every day for the people who get judged before they get individually treated.
I have worked as a registered nurse since 2009 and as an assisting nurse prior to that. Right now I combine my doula work with working as a research nurse, but I keep longing to go back to palliative care. Once I had attended a few births as a support person, I realized that much of the things that I love about palliative care also exist in the work of labor and delivery. The importance of personal support and understanding. That is when I decided to become a doula.
I work with hypnobirthing and has seen it do so much for both my clients and myself when I gave birth to my youngest child. I love learning new things, taking long train rides, meditate and cooking.
